Hi there,

suddenly (?) k9mail has problems sending emails. It works using the
same user/password with thunderbird, also fetching emails works.

Password is correct (using another one results in understandable error
message).

I have had similar problem for some weeks:

All used to work fine and then I started getting error messages when
sending:

Failed to send some messages

and

Authentication failed

Authentication failed for name name. Update your server settings.

I checked all settings including password many times but no change and just
got error message:

Setup could not finish

Username or password incorrect.

(AUTH PLAIN failed (Incorrect authentication data))

Eventually uninstalled K9, reinstalled and reimported settings and all
worked fine. For about a day and then back to same problems.

Clearly this may not be due to K9 and could be due, for example, to Android
or BitDefender but K9 seems most likely though I see last update was Jan
2018.

Any advice appreciated.

Who's your mail provider?

I use TWC, recently mangled into Spectrum. Spectrum changed something on their mail servers and only allows one POP3 connection at a time.

So if you've set up 2 different mail clients to both use POP3 - the first one to connect succeeds, the second one fails with an error message.

Their official response was we should only use IMAP.

Does that help?

Thanks for the thoughts.

I only use IMAP and so don’t think this can have anything to do with it. Also works fine from other devices, it is only this phone which, incidentally, has the same problem on my wife’s email accounts and phone.

And odd how it worked after being reinstalled but then went back to same error.

Thanks,

What can I do to solve this? It seems persistent (three or four days
up to now).

Best regards,

Who's your mail provider?

I use TWC, recently mangled into Spectrum. Spectrum changed something on their mail servers and only allows one POP3 connection at a time.

So if you've set up 2 different mail clients to both use POP3 - the first one to connect succeeds, the second one fails with an error message.

Their official response was we should only use IMAP.

Does that help?

450 Requested mail action not taken: mailbox unavailable
This suggests the server doesn't know the account with the address used
in the MAIL FROM command. Please check the original log to make sure
it's really your email address without any additional characters. You
can change it under 'Account settings > Sending mail > Manage identities'.
